First sentence Friday is a weekly post in which we share the first sentence of our current read, share a few words about the book and our feelings so far. It is a great way to discover new books and stories, in a fun and spoiler free way.
The first sentence
‘I’ve done my damndest to rip a reader’s nerves to rags, I don’t want him satisfied.’ Shocking and controversial when it was first published, The Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck’s Pultizer Prize-winning epic of the Joad family, forced to travel west from Dust Bowl era Oklahoma in search of the promised land of California. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires and powerlessness, yet out of their struggle Steinbeck created a drama that is both intensely human and majestic in its scale and moral vision.
My feelings so far
As you might know, I am not a huge reader of classics. I picked this one up because one of my reading goal of the year (like every year, to be honest) is to read more classic books. And since I don’t know much about American classic literature, I thought it was a great idea to start with this one. I’ve read just one chapter so far and I do love the writing so far. I always find it a little hard to talk about classic literature, because I never feel really legitimate do to so, somehow. But I will do my best, even if I think it will take me a long time to read this one, as I want to be sure to understand everything.
